|Heritage Ireland 2030: A new National|
Heritage Plan for Ireland Heritage in
Ireland is witnessing some exciting times. The country has so many different attributes and
values that combine to give us our shared sense of place and the sense of who we are together, with more and more local groups and individuals leading the way and advocating for heritage at the local level. The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has recently announced that a new National Heritage Plan is to be undertaken and has called on the people of Ireland to get involved; encouraged to make their voice heard and to make a real difference to the scope and ambition of the Plan, which will be titled Heritage Ireland 2030.The County of Cork is steeped in heritage and is lucky to have such great numbers of groups and individuals who have a love for this heritage, regularly protecting and promoting it at every opportunity. The vision of Heritage Ireland 2030 is that heritage is valued and protected, and the people of Cork, individuals and community groups alike, now have the opportunity to express how much heritage means by having their voice heard on the national level with regard to how heritage should be prioritised over the next 10 years.
|To stimulate thought and the development of ideas, a consultation document has been devised by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, which is available to view online at www.chg.gov.ie/heritage/heritageireland2030. Anyone and everyone with an interest in heritage is encouraged to get involved; submissions can be as simple or as detailed as one wishes. In order to support groups and individuals who wish to make a submission, Cork County Council is hosting an information session on Thursday 14th February from 17:30 to 19:30 in the Council Chamber, Floor 2 of the County Hall. |SafeTALK SafeTALK ‘Suicide alertness for everyone’ is a half day training programme that prepares participants to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. These specific skills are called suicide alertness and are taught with the expectation that the person learning them will use them to help reduce suicide risk in their communities. Participants learn how to provide practical help to persons with thoughts of suicide in only a few hours. SafeTALK Following a safeTALK workshop you will be more willing and able to perform an important helping role for persons with thoughts of suicide.||This workshop will be held at the Youghal Community Health Project, Blackwater Heights on Thursday the 21st of February from 6:30-9pm. |Glounthaune Energy Master PlanGlounthaune launches its Energy Master Plan at an Energy Day taking place at the Elm Tree Glounthaune on Saturday 9th February 2019 The very real threat of global warming is encouraging more and more people to explore what might be done in a practical way. Responding to this need, a voluntary group Glounthaune Sustainable Energy Community has succeeded in completing a detailed energy usage study of the Glounthaune area just outside Cork city. Supported by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), an Energy Master Plan has been commissioned and recently completed. The plan will be launched at an Energy Day to be held on Saturday 9th February 2019 at the Elm Tree in Glounthaune from 11am to 3pm.||The Energy Day will also feature information stands on home grants, professional installers and will have a number of electric cars available on the day for test drives. Also present will be a Young Scientist award winner from Carrigtwohill with a project on solar panels. Glounthaune Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) was sponsored by Glounthaune Tidy Towns and was set up in 2017 under the chairmanship of Ailbe Ryan. During 2018 the Glounthaune group signed up as formal partners with SEAI and was able to avail of dedicated funding for the Energy Master Plan.There are now 236 Sustainable Energy Communities nationwide with 22 SECs in County Cork, an increase of almost 100% since 2017.||The SEC approach is to harness community based interest in increasing awareness of energy efficiency and promoting practical bottom-up approaches to stimulate appropriate action in energy reduction measures. The SEC process also provides a pathway towards increasing local knowledge of energy reduction and renewable energy matters. SEAI facilitates this community approach by free mentoring support from an expert pool. Glounthaune Sustainable Energy Community leads the way in Cork with the first completed Energy Master Plan funded by SEAI. The Energy Master Plan identifies the main ways energy is used in the area and suggests ways of reducing it and using renewable energy. A listing of the optimal measures which could be implemented has also been produced, the so-called register of opportunities. It provides an action plan based on the actual local situation as a practical pathway for accelerating progress over the near future as a step towards minimising global warming.|
|Become a Sustainable Development Goal AdvocateDevelopment Perspectives are currently recruiting for their SDG advocate programme. The SDG Advocate programme offers 26 active citizens an opportunity to represent their community, by becoming one of Ireland’s positive changemakers. The 8month training course will allow the advocates to deepen their understanding of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals, represent the project internationally and lead transformative change in Ireland. Development Perspectives are looking for community activists, change makers and global thinkers to apply for the chance to take part by February 19th. The chosen participants will travel to Vietnam or Tanzania for 2 weeks during summer 2019. The work/study visit affords an invaluable chance to experience first-hand perspectives and challenges that people face in a different global context.||This part-time educational programme and life-changing opportunity is one element of a larger project called the #SDGchallenge which was awarded the Dóchas 2017 SDG Champion Award, an award designed to recognise an organisation that has done outstanding work around the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals and was a finalist in the 2018 UN SDG Action Awards, designed to recognise outstanding achievements and innovative efforts to promote action on the Sustainable Development Goals. Other relevant information
We would like to build an online resource for the local community under the domain kinsale.ie, some of which can be open to visitors and some which would need to be password protected. The proposed Kinsale Community Databank will combine feeds from existing sources of local information (eg Golden Pages, LinkedIn, Facebook, Google Maps, MeetUp, etc) and new content. In order to build this, we will need to commission some software development work and recruit a ‘Data Ambassador’ to encourage supply, collate and upload content – especially local directory content. It should include:
- An historic archive – structured to allow browsing, and including images and text. Volunteer historians are sought to develop the content for this.
- A ‘living archive’ based on contributions from residents and those with a special relationship to Kinsale. This will be based on the My Kinsale book content with updates and adding video and audio files. We would like to extend this project along the lines of An Duchas https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes, and will apply for Creative Ireland funding to support this work. Volunteer researchers and recorders and sought to help capture content locally.
- A skills database driven by referrals to allow users to look up and rate people’s skills/refer friends – this will build on the ‘Recommendations’ section of Kinsale Noticeboard and establish an ongoing reference source – specific skills (eg plumbing) and past experience (eg worked in traffic management). To avoid GDPR concerns, this will need careful planning and systems architecture. In order to populate this in the first instance, a survey will be carried out to collect skills information.
- A portal to The Kinsale Co-operative Society online ‘banking’ services – more on this to come.
- A Community Groups section which profiles each of the established Kinsale groups, of which there are about 20-30, and allows for news to be added. A volunteer is sought to contact all groups with a standard form for content provision and to collate this section.
In order to move this project forward, IBK would like to engage with potential sponsors/donors in the region to help fund the work and those who could access corporate support (eg in providing CRM and project management). We would also like to engage with school and college students to set up projects to collect local stories, podcasts/videos and to digitise/annotate photo collections.
St Catherine’s Church, Summercove
We were awarded planning permission for a change of use from a church to a community building. Unfortunately we have one objector and his main problem is parking and other health and safety issues.
We have addressed his main parking issue by leasing part of our neighbours field and our conservation architect assures us the health and safety issues have been included in our plans.
We await An Bord Pleanála decision which we hope will be shortly so that our committee can complete the restoration of a disused old church to a modern community centre for the use of all local residents and tourists.
St Multose Church
St Multose Church is a national monument and we (the vestry) have recently completed new signage to improve the visitor experience.
There are now four main large display boards situated inside the church under the balcony giving a brief history of Kinsale and our church which is one of the oldest if not the oldest working church in Ireland dating from 1190! The separate web site for St Multose is http://www.kinsale.cork.anglican.org
We are also currently working on a new community room which will be used for Sunday school, a meeting room for local groups and a further display area for tourists to visit. We are currently one of the top hits on ‘trip advisor ‘ and our visitor book can testify to this!

The concept is that we develop an additional element to the kinsale.ie website for community information. It should form an online and mobile information source whose primary focus is the community, but also with relevance to visitors, coupled with a mobile app allowing interactive experience. Supported by advertising/sponsorship and including kiosks around town for access while visiting (eg in shops/pubs). The kinsale.ie can become a portal for this information, and also as the link to The Kinsale Co-Operative.

TTK would like to be involved with the development of Kinsale as a model for sustainability; a town that has begun the transition to our low carbon future. Kinsale led that way as a food destination it could now be one of the leaders in sustainability. Kinsale is perfectly placed to do this as the birthplace of the Transition Movement.
Kinsale advocated for the development of The Battle of Kinsale Sites to be developed as a cycle route in the 2010 Local Area Plan and it was included!
